Workshop I
Getting Down – Negotiating the Ground
Saturday, March 23, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Yoga Room
How comfortable are you with being and moving on the ground? How easily can you get up from and down to the floor? Do you know how to fall in a way that helps to avoid injury?
Much of our modern lifestyle is geared toward avoiding being close the ground. Which is why getting down to and up from the ground and falling can be fearful prospects – now, or later on in life.
The truth is that humans have worked close to the ground – crawling, squatting, etc. – for thousands of years and reaped all the benefits that come with doing so – strength, joint mobility, coordination, balance, and stability.
If you’ve lost (or never had) the confidence that comes with having these benefits, this workshop is designed with you in mind.
After a brief warmup, we’ll dive into exploration of ground-based movements. Learn how to turn and roll your body with ease, ways of transitioning from reclining to sitting to upright, dynamic use of your arms and legs to aid propulsion and much more.
Cost (per workshop):
Early-bird (until Monday, March 4):
Conquer members: $20
Non-members: $30
Regular pricing:
Conquer members: $28
Non-members: $40
Suggested to wear/bring:
Long pants. A t-shirt and/or long-sleeve shirt. Socks. Water bottle and a snack.
Workshop II
Up and At Them – Upright Movement
Saturday, April 6, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Yoga Room
Have you ever examined the way that you walk and/or run? Can you travel across the ground with relative ease? Did you know that your spine is the main driver for your upright movements?
These days, if we’re walking or running, it’s typically either to get to a destination or for exercise. Humans have largely lost the habit of using these movements purely for the enjoyment of the journey.
Adding to this, how we coordinate our body in movement can often inhibit those efforts, and keep us away from other upright activity, like jumping, climbing, or dancing.
Whether you are looking to boost your weekly walks/runs, seeking to improve athletic capability or simply want to explore ways to make the journey more enjoyable, this workshop can help you get there.
In this session you’ll learn:
- how to effectively use your spine in upright locomotion
- about the psoas muscle and its role in bipedal movement
- about the hip-knee-foot complex and how the three joints work together in walking, running, and jumping
- how to use your arms to aid in propulsion
- how to foster more joy and freedom in your movement
Cost (per workshop):
